Perplexity has real-time web access—it can find current competitors, recent funding announcements, and live pricing pages. Claude is better at synthesis, scoring, and identifying patterns across information.
The 5 Ideas I Validated
Before we dive into the process, here were my 5 ideas:

Saturday Morning: Rapid Market Sizing (2 hours)
I started each idea with the same Perplexity prompt:
For the [IDEA DESCRIPTION] market:
1. What's the estimated market size (TAM/SAM)?
2. What are the top 5 existing solutions?
3. What do users complain about in reviews?
4. What's the typical pricing range?
5. Any recent funding or acquisitions in this space?
Example output for Idea #2 (Proposal Automation):
Perplexity returned:

- Top players: PandaDoc, Proposify, Qwilr, Better Proposals, HoneyBook
- Common complaints: "Too complex for small teams," "Expensive for solo consultants," "Templates feel corporate"

Time per idea: 15-20 minutes
Key learning: The proposal market was more crowded than I expected, but the complaints revealed a clear gap—existing tools are built for sales teams, not solo consultants.
Saturday Afternoon: Competitor Deep Dives (3 hours)
For each idea, I picked the top 3 competitors and analyzed them systematically.
My Claude prompt:

For each, identify:
1. Core value proposition (one sentence)

I fed Claude the competitor websites plus G2/Capterra review summaries from Perplexity.
Scoring insight: I assigned each idea a "competition score" based on:
- Number of well-funded competitors (more = harder)
- Quality of existing solutions (higher = harder)
- Clear differentiation opportunity (clearer = easier)
Idea #4 (Meal Planning) scored poorly here—dozens of apps, several with $10M+ funding, and differentiation would require significant content investment.
Saturday Evening: The Scoring Session (2 hours)
With market data and competitor analysis in hand, I scored each idea across 6 dimensions:
- Market Size & Demand
- Competition Landscape
- Technical Feasibility
- Monetization Clarity
- Personal Fit
- Timing & Trends
I used Claude to help calibrate scores:

Sunday Morning: Deep Dive on Top 3 (3 hours)
For the surviving ideas, I did additional research:
Customer Voice Research
I searched Reddit, Twitter, and Indie Hackers for people discussing the problem:
Perplexity: Find Reddit threads and Twitter discussions where
[target customer] complains about [problem].
What exact words do they use to describe their frustration?
This revealed gold for the Code Review idea—solo developers on r/SideProject constantly mentioned "I wish someone would review my code" and "Code review is the thing I miss most about working on a team."
Pricing Validation
Claude: Based on this competitive pricing landscape and target customer
(solo developers making $80-150k), what price point would maximize
both conversion and revenue? Consider anchoring effects.
Claude suggested $19/month—below the $29 "psychological barrier" for solo developers, but high enough to signal quality.
Technical Feasibility Check
For each remaining idea, I outlined the MVP scope:
Claude: What's the minimum feature set to deliver core value for [IDEA]?
List only must-have features for a 4-week MVP.
Be ruthless about scope.
The Code Review tool needed: GitHub integration, AI analysis, actionable feedback UI. That's it. No team features, no enterprise SSO, no custom rules engine.
Sunday Afternoon: Final Decision (1 hour)
After research, I re-scored the top 3 ideas with fresh perspective:

What I Learned
1. Speed creates clarity
When you validate slowly, you overthink. You find reasons to pursue ideas you're emotionally attached to. Speed forces objectivity.
2. AI is for gathering, humans are for deciding
I used AI to compress weeks of research into hours. But the final decision—weighing tradeoffs, considering personal fit, imagining the next 2 years—that's still human judgment.
3. Personal fit matters more than market size
Meal Planning had the biggest market. It also had the lowest Personal Fit score. Markets don't build products—founders do. If you're not genuinely interested, you'll quit before product-market fit.
4. Competitor complaints are product roadmaps
The most valuable research was reading negative reviews. Every complaint is a feature request. Every frustration is a positioning opportunity.
5. One weekend > one month of procrastination
Before this experiment, those 5 ideas had been "pending research" for months. Now I have a clear winner and four ideas properly archived. That mental clarity alone was worth the weekend.
